Finally, this Thursday Benjamin Netanyahu took office as Prime Minister of Israel, just 18 months after being separated from his position. He came to power after forming the most right-wing coalition in the short history of the Middle Eastern country, with quite controversial figures in the international community.
Just over half of the members of congress voted in favor of establishing the government that is made up of the Likud party, with which the Middle Eastern politician is associated, as well as two other ultra-Orthodox parties and three far-right parties. “I know you won’t applaud, but I hope you respect the voters’ decision and stop rebelling against the elected government. And in a democracy, do not climb the fences of Parliament or the Capitol, nor the fence of the Knesset”, were the words with which the new president of Israel pointed to the opposition.
“A democratic regime is tested, above all, by the willingness of the losing side to accept the decision of the majority. In an orderly democracy, the rules of the game are respected. We have only seen that now in a different scenario, in the World Cup matches. The French fans were disappointed but accepted the result, they even applauded the Argentine National Team,” Netanyahu told members of the Congress of Israel in his opening speech.
He had been ousted from office in 2021, after the opposition, led by Yair Lapid, formed a rotational government in June of that year. However, his party was still the largest in the Israeli congress, so his victory came just a year later, when the 2022 vote ended.
The request of the Palestinians
One of the communities most affected by the election of this new government are the Palestinians, who, during the previous mandates of the current Prime MinisterThey experienced several moments of tension.
Now, the Palestinian Authority published a letter calling on the international community to boycott the coalition that “creates an existential crisis for people of our ethnicity.”
“We reject annexationism, racism and incitement to racist violence and ethnic cleansing that the new government of Israel”, they denounced from the institution.
