According to Felix Klein, the federal government’s commissioner for the fight against anti-Semitism, he has not received a letter from Hans-Georg Maassen asking for an interview. He told the Tagesspiegel on Sunday. Klein contradicts Maassen’s statement in his written statement to the CDU party leadership.

“The assertion made by Mr. Maaßen in his letter to the CDU party leadership that he wrote to me after I critically commented on his unacceptable statements and asked for an interview is not correct,” says Klein. “To date I have not received a letter from Mr. Maaßen.”

This is clearly anti-Semitic.

Felix Klein about Hans-Georg Maassen’s statements

In terms of content, Klein renews his criticism of Maassen: “Mr. Maassen’s adoption of vocabulary used to describe National Socialist crimes – most recently the claim that there is an ‘eliminatory racism against whites’ emanating from ‘driving political forces’ – relativizes and distorts the Holocaust perpetrator and victim roles. That is clearly anti-Semitic.”

Klein also commented on Maassen’s dispute with his party leadership: “I find the terminology used by Mr. Maassen and his untruthful statements to the CDU party leadership outrageous. It is frightening how he, as former President of the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution, wants to brutalize the political discourse.”

The CDU party leadership wants to get rid of Maassen, if necessary by means of a party exclusion procedure. In a written statement addressed to CDU General Secretary Mario Czaja, Maassen described the dispute with Klein as follows: He, Maassen, was shocked by Klein’s accusation and therefore immediately wrote to him and asked for an interview. Klein didn’t respond.

In the letter to Czaja, Maassen also suggested that the party leadership issue a warning instead of pursuing his expulsion. He was “basically willing to accept” a warning. The next meetings of the Presidium and Federal Executive Committee of the CDU are on Monday.
