Jujuy, La Rioja and Misiones have local regulation, in addition to the National Electoral Code, for the hours prior to the elections

Jujuy, La Rioja and Misionesthree provinces in northern Argentina, will hold their elections this Sunday, May 7.

It is what is known as electoral ban. The spirit of this measure is to grant voters a space for reflection in the run-up to their final decision, after having listened for a period of time to what all the leaders who aspire to be elected to different positions propose.

Although this regulation is framed by the National Electoral Code (Law 19,945), which establishes in its article 71 what cannot be done in the hours before the elections, during them and up to three hours after, each province has, in turn, a local regulation.

This is not essentially different from what the national code says.

so, in JujuyProvincial Law 4,564 imposes in its article 79 the beginning of the ban and general prohibitions in the context of the elections.

In The RiojaMeanwhile, provincial law 5,139 establishes the operation of the ban in its article 68.

In MissionsProvincial Electoral Law XI No. 6, imposes in its article 66 the conditions of the ban.

In the three districts, the electoral ban begins 48 hours before the opening of the elections. That is to say that the Friday at 8 a.m. Jujuy, La Rioja and Misiones are closed.

Therefore they are prohibited

– Public acts of proselytism

– Keep open the houses for the sale of any kind of alcoholic beverages until three (3) hours after the closing of the poll

– Offer or deliver ballots to voters within a radius of eighty (80) meters from the polling stations, counted on the road, street or path.

– Popular shows in the open air or in closed venues, theatrical and sports festivals and all kinds of public meetings that do not refer to the electoral act, during its development and up to three (3) hours after it has been closed.

– To the voters, the carrying of arms, the use of flags, currency or other emblems during the day of the election, twelve (12) hours before and three (3) hours after the end of the election.

– The opening of party organizations within a radius of eighty (80) meters from the place where polling stations are installed. The Electoral Tribunal or any of its members may order the temporary closure of the premises that are in violation of the above provisions. Reception tables will not be installed less than eighty (80) meters from the headquarters where the domicile of the recognized Political Parties is located.

Misiones also incorporates two articles in its electoral legislation that prohibits the dissemination of surveys and the inauguration of public works that can be used as a campaign act (article 66, subsections 3 and 4 of the province’s electoral law).

In the elections of Jujuy governor and vice will be elected for the next four years, 24 provincial deputies and 10 substitutes. It should be noted that the current governor Gerardo Morales cannot be re-elected for a third term. In addition, the province will vote for 48 conventional constituents and 10 substitutes, 27 mayors and municipal authorities.

The Rioja, meanwhile, will elect governor and vice, provincial deputies in 11 departments, mayors and councilors in all departments of the province. In addition, 36 conventional constituents will vote to carry out the reform of their provincial Constitution.

In MissionsFinally, the electorate will go to the polls to elect governor and vice president, 20 titular provincial deputies, 7 substitute provincial deputies and 73 municipal authorities.
