Berlin teacher on podcasts: “A great way to promote technical language”

Ms. Stier, audio podcasts are generally very popular, and the Tagesspiegel also offers some. You used the format for a project with sixth graders. What makes this medium so interesting for school lessons?
Two things in particular: First, it ties in with the everyday experiences of the students, because many of them also listen to podcasts themselves. Secondly, technical language is often neglected in the classroom. But in the subjects I teach – math and computer science – technical language is incredibly important because it enables us to talk about things precisely. Podcasts in particular are a great way to focus completely on the language – without the visual support that you usually have with presentations and the like. In podcasts, how you express yourself is incredibly important. And it’s a great way to encourage jargon.
