The premises had been used as a storage place for road-killed animals, waiting for owners to come forward. But communication had broken down within the municipality and around 30 cats turned out to have lain forgotten in the freezer for over ten years.

The news also provoked strong reactions in social media and among animal welfare associations. After the high-profile incident, the municipality has drawn up new procedures for handling pets that have been hit.
