Thursday, April 13 is World Scrabble Day. One of the most popular board games in the world turns 75. A fun game that will delight young and old alike.

Thursday April 13 is World Scrabble Day, which celebrates its 75th anniversary. In Rennes (Ille-et-Vilaine), the famous game of scrabble crosses generations. In a school, 62 pupils aged 9 to 12 come together to take part in the grand finale of the school championships. A hit with young players. “Words, I know a lot of them, because I read a lot”testifies one of the players. A fun game very useful in learning spelling. “In the classroom, it allows you to develop vocabulary, a lot of skills also in arithmetic, in mental calculation”explains Marie-Christine Chycki, president of the Rennes-Rapatel scrabble club.

200,000 boxes sold each year in France

In Golbey (Vosges), at the French Scrabble Championship, the atmosphere is more studious. Benjamin Valour, 39, is a two-time world scrabble champion. He has some tips. “You must already learn the little words, because they are the ones that fall most often”he explains. Published since 1948 and played all over the world, scrabble has not finished entertaining your afternoons. Each year, 200,000 boxes are sold in France.
