So it is not Nintendo’s fire-breathing turtle. Neither does Nintendo of America boss Doug Bowser. The Bowser who is now on the loose is Gary Bowser, one of the frontmen of the pirate team Xecuter. He was sentenced last year to prison for 40 months and to pay damages of almost SEK 150 million for his involvement in the sale of pirated chips for, among other things, Nintendo’s consoles.

Videogamechronicle reports that Gary Bowser was released from a US federal prison early in late March, and is currently going through the process of returning to his native Canada. Bowser has said that so far he has paid back about 1,800 kroner of the damages with wages for work he had in prison. The rest of the compensation, 52-year-old Bowser will have to pay for the rest of his life.

“With the deal with Nintendo, at most they can take between 25% and 30% of your gross salary every month,” Bowser stated in a interview with Youtuber Nick Moses.
