Russian President Vladimir Putin has announced the suspension of the last major nuclear disarmament treaty with the United States.

Vladimir Putin suspended the last major nuclear weapons disarmament treaty. The Russian President clarified in Moscow that it is not about an exit, but merely about your suspension of the “New Start” treaty with the USA.

The “New Start” agreement is the follow-up agreement to the “Start II” treaty, with which Russia and the USA wanted to speed up the dismantling of their nuclear arsenals, in particular the land-launched ICBMs with multiple warheads. With “New Start”, the two states committed themselves to operate only 1,550 nuclear warheads and 800 delivery systems each.

The abbreviation “Start” stands for Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty. In order to ensure that both sides dismantle their weapon systems, the USA and Russia had agreed on mutual controls, in which inspectors should be granted access to the top-secret nuclear arsenals. (pcl/dpa)
