In a semifinal to the best of 33 ‘frames’, Brecel lost 5-14 against Si, 20 years old, but when the game resumed he won the next nine consecutively to draw 14-14, prevailed in the next two to place up 16-14, then lost to 16-15 and then ended up winning 17-15.
In the 46 years of the World Cups, a player had never staged a comeback of this caliber.
Only two players (Ken Doherty in the 2003 final and Dennis Taylor in the 18-17 win over Steve Davis) had previously rallied from eight frame deficits to win at Sheffield’s Crucible Theatre.
Earlier, Brecel had beaten English seven-time world champion Ronnie O’Sullivan in the quarterfinals, against whom he came back from 10-6 down to advance to 13-10.
Brecel, 28, will play for his first world title against the winner of the duel between the Englishman Mark Selby, four times world champion, and the Northern Irishman Mark Allen, who dominates the first one 14-10. EFE
