Britain had its hottest June on record

The average temperature in the country in June was 15.8 degrees Celsius (60.4 Fahrenheit), or 0.9 degrees Celsius higher than the previous record of 14.9 degrees Celsius set in 1940 and 1976, according to the agency.

The probability of breaking that previous record has doubled since the 1940s, forecasters say.

“Apart from natural variations, the warming of the Earth’s atmosphere due to human activity has increased the possibility of reaching record temperatures,” said meteorologist Paul Davies. “By the 2050s, the probability of exceeding the previous record of 14.9 °C could be as high as 50%, every year or two.”

Wide regions of the country — from the Orkney Islands in northern Scotland to Cornwall in south-west England — had record temperatures last month, with some temperatures 2.5°C above average.

The maximum temperature recorded last month was 32.2°C, much higher than the typical temperature for this time of year, which is usually around 20 to 25°C, the agency said.

High temperatures killed thousands of fish, experts say.

2022, says the meteorological agency, was the hottest year in British history, with an annual average of 10.03 degrees Celsius, that is, 0.89 °C above the average between 1991-2020.

All of Britain’s 10 maximum temperatures have occurred in the last 20 years, demonstrating the effect global warming is having on Britain’s climate, the experts added.
