Gamers who want to buy a new CPU shouldn’t find it easy this week either. Will it be a new platform or maybe an AM4 motherboard for the fast Ryzen 7 5800X3D? According to current miser searches, most still opted for the latter. The platform intended for Ryzen 1000, 2000, 3000 and 5000, which was up to date for at least five years, is now so widespread that the platform question does not even arise. After all, anyone who is already using an older Ryzen does not need a new substructure. At least as long as there are so many Ryzen 5000 processors with still solid Zen 3 technology to buy. And in fact, at the end of this week, veteran Ryzens are again in the top 10 of the most sought-after processors in a price comparison. However, the balance of power has changed a bit. Although AMD occupies the first three steps of the podium, it now “only” has half instead of the majority of the most sought-after CPUs for gaming and Co. What hasn’t changed is that only a current Ryzen makes it to a top position. Again it is the Ryzen 5 7600 euros from 242 euros.

Buy CPU: Ryzen 7 5800X3D still dominant in CPU searches

Once again, neither a current AMD nor a current Intel processor is at the top, but the Ryzen 7 5800X3D, which was released last year as the gaming spearhead. Although it only has eight cores, not 12 or 16 like the Ryzen 9 series, it can boast of additional L3 cache in games. This even makes it stand out against Intel’s Core i 13000 and AMD’s Ryzen 7000 series – although the CPU is far above but is no longer at the top. If you consider what Intel and AMD charge for their current flagships, with its 338 euros (at Mindfactoy and Amazon) but without question a good match. In addition, with a complete new purchase there would still be the prices for new mainboards and at least on the AMD side there would still be DDR5 main memory – with Intel, current CPUs can also be operated with cheap DDR4 mainboards. But before you buy everything new, one or the other prefers to get everything out of their “old” AM4 platform for the first four Ryzen generations.

AMD Ryzen 7 5700X and AMD Ryzen 5 5600 are close behind

The Ryzen 7 5800X3D is followed closely by the Ryzen 7 5700X and Ryzen 5600 in the search queries. Again, it seems to have paid off that the AM4 platform, with its CPUs of different Zen generations, has lasted for so long. After all, there are enough veteran processors that could be replaced without additional platform costs. Retailers want at least 184 euros for the eight-core and 137 euros for the six-core. In both cases, Mindfactory calls for the best prices, but Amazon is not far with the AMD Ryzen 7 5700X processor with its offer of 192.99 euros.

Buy a CPU: Intel Core i5-13600KF, Core i7-13700K and Core i-9-13900K come into play

The triumvirate around the Ryzen 7 5800X3D has a three-click from Intel breathing down its neck. In particular, it is the Core i5-13600KF, Core i7-13700K and Core i-9-13900K from Intel’s current Raptor Lake generation that take fourth to sixth place of search queries follow. The fact that the Core i5-13600KF, with its six performance and eight energy-saving cores, is more in demand than its siblings is again due to the good price-performance ratio. From around 315 euros you can buy the CPU with more than enough performance for games, while the Core i7-13700K starts at 448.99 euros and the Core i9-13900K at 617.44 euros. The advantage compared to modern AMD processors of the Ryzen 7000 generation is that you can also use a motherboard for cheap DDR4 memory. The Gigabyte B660 Gaming X DDR4 (buy at Amazon for 138 euros) and Gigabyte B760 Gaming X DDR4 (at Computeruniverse for 152.90 euros)

Buy a Ryzen or Intel Core i CPU: Variety in places 6 to 10

The last four places in the CPU top 10 for search queries no longer follow as a blue or orange unit block. Instead, AMD and Intel processors follow in turn. 6th place goes to the little brother of the Ryzen 7 5800X3D, the Ryzen 7 5800X, which is similar in principle, but has no 3D V-Cache installed. The Intel Core i5-13600K that follows is not that different from the already mentioned Core i5-13600KF. However, the F tag indicates that the graphics unit is not on board. The already mentioned Ryzen 5 7600 from the current Ryzen 7000 series only comes in ninth place. It differs from the X variant, which is still only slightly more expensive, in that it has a slightly lower clock rate, the lower TDP of 65 watts and the included cooler. Strangely enough, Mindfactory sells the non-X version for 242 euros to buy, although the Ryzen 5 7600X with 252 euros hardly costs more. The Intel Core i5-12400F from the Alder Lake generation, which is no longer brand new, marks the bottom of the CPU top 10. It was practically the counterpart to the Ryzen 5000, with which the Intel six-core processor can still keep up well.

Background Ryzen 7 5800X3D and AM4 motherboard compatibility

With the launch of the first Ryzen CPUs in 2017, AMD promised to keep the platform up to date. With the launch of Ryzen 5000, AMD initially seemed to break its word, because initially only mainboards with a 500 “chipset” (I/O hub) supported the new processors. However, it wasn’t long before BIOS updates appeared for many mainboards with B450 and X470 chipsets to accommodate new processors. Early last year, motherboard manufacturers did even some of their X370 mainboards fit for new Ryzen processors. With a platform that has grown over the years, there is of course a huge user base for which an upgrade to Ryzen 5000 is an option. If you are unsure whether your AM4 mainboard can still handle a CPU upgrade, the mainboard manufacturer is of course the best place to go. Asus, Gigabyte, MSI, Asrock and Co. usually have support pages for their products. There you will find information about any BIOS updates and CPU lists.
