Sustainability is also a top priority in the British royal family. For her coronation, King’s wife Camilla gets an old, subtly embellished crown.

London – Visitors to the Tower of London will have to do without the sight of a well-known crown in the coming time. Queen Mary’s crown has been removed from display at the popular tourist attraction in preparation for Queen Camilla’s coronation, the palace said on Tuesday. The Crown Jeweler will make “some minor changes and additions”.

It is the first time in recent history that an existing crown has been used for the coronation of a royal consort and no new one has been made, the palace said. This is in the interest of sustainability and efficiency. Camilla is said to be married to her husband King Charles III on May 6th. to be crowned in London’s Westminster Abbey.

The inclusion of jewels in a crown is in line with tradition and should reflect the uniqueness of the occasion and the royal consort’s individual style, it said. The changes also pay tribute to Camilla’s mother-in-law, Queen Elizabeth II. The diamonds Cullinan III, IV and V are to be inserted, which the Queen, who died in September, often wore as brooches and some of which were already part of the crown earlier.

The “Crown of Queen Mary” was made in 1911 for Queen Mary, wife of King George V. The new monarch Charles is traditionally crowned with the Edwardian crown. The jewel has been adapted for the ceremony and will now be displayed again in the Tower, the palace said. It was initially unclear whether Mary’s crown would also be on display in the Tower before the coronation. dpa
