On the occasion of the commemoration of the sixth anniversary of the terrorist and Islamophobic attack that targeted the mosque in Quebec City on January 29, 2017, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau declared last Sunday that Islamophobia has no place in Canada. However, Islamic Relief Canada has just released its new report, on January 27, which deals with Islamophobia in the workplace. This report is based on the direct testimonies of 690 Muslims. Of which 65% are men and 35% women.

Moreover, the Islamic Relief Canada study indicates that 66% of those questioned work full-time and 72% hold an advanced degree.

This study by Islamic Relief Canada points to a form of Islamophobia. Particularly formal and informal. The first form is illustrated by inequalities in access to remuneration, promotions and professional responsibilities. As for the second form, this is linked to behavior and the quality of relationships in the professional environment.

Moreover, for the head of communications and government relations at Islamic Relief Canada, in this case Reyhana Patel, what is the most misunderstood are the micro-aggressions of which Muslims are victims on a daily basis. 84% of these Muslims say they have experienced informal discrimination at work.

According to Islamic Relief Canada, this discrimination has a strong impact on the career development of these Muslims. In effect, 80% of respondents let it be known that they cannot occupy certain employment positions because of their religious affiliation.

This report also indicates that Muslim women, especially those who wear the veil and the Niqab, experience the highest levels of Islamophobia at work. The latter have a harder time finding a job and advancing in their careers.
