The Ministry of Health, through its Cancer Control Agency, presented the latest Report of Morbimortality due to cancer in the province of Santa Fe. This is a detailed analysis of epidemiological surveillance for cancer in the last decade, with Mortality data in the period 2011-2019 and incidence in the five-year period 2013-2017.

The data was presented this Wednesday in the city of Rosario, at the annual meeting of Lalcec region IV, which brings together all the volunteers from the provinces of Santa Fe and Entre Ríos.

Among the data processed by the Cancer Control Agency report, the mortality and incidence of the tumors that most affect the population stand out: lung, breast, colon and cervix cancer; it also adds the data on mortality and incidence of melanoma.

The epidemiological surveillance of cancer is based on the continuous and systematic collection of data on the occurrence of this disease and its determinants. In addition to determining, for example, that during the five-year period between 2013 and 2017, 52,701 tumors were diagnosed in the province of Santa Fe, about 10,500 cases of cancer per yearthe report allows knowing the distribution of the factors that directly and indirectly affect the health of the population and is a tool for managers responsible for decision making.

In this sense, Dr. Graciela López de Degani, provincial director of the Cancer Control Agency, highlighted: “We have departmental data that allows us to have a micro-regional analysis and know what health strategy we should take in each place. We know, for example, that in the north we must prioritize the prevention of cervical cancer, which in the south will be another strategy, as well as in each department analysed. Having this information positions us to work seriously on the public policies that we implement to improve the quality of life of all these people who at some point in their lives may have any of these diseases.”

The official referred to global data from the last report and highlighted that “the province of Santa Fe is located in terms of its mortality and incidence statistics at a national average, with some variations, such as a little above in relation to breast cancer colon and below in terms of cervical cancer. For this reason, the population screening and early detection strategies that are articulated from each Prevention Program of the Cancer Control Agency are prioritized.
