In addition to marchinhas and bloquinhos, alcohol consumption is one of the main protagonists of Carnival. However, in the heat of the moment, many people forget that drinking is considered a drug, is bad for health and needs to be consumed in moderation. But is there a safe amount of alcohol to drink at parties?

The World Health Organization (WHO) has an alcohol consumption scale to measure the risk of a patient developing alcohol dependence or other damage to health, according to physician Ábner Prado, from the Institute of Neurology in Goiânia. This scale is measured in units.

The number is different for men and women due to the particularities of each organism. According to the clinician, there is also a distinction when taking into account the weekly or episodic amount, that is, if the person drank all the alcohol in one day – like at Carnival, for example.

“For men, it is considered 21 units of alcohol per week, the equivalent of 12 cans of beer. As for women, the safe limit is 14 units, which corresponds to eight cans a week, ”he explains.

Prado adds that, if alcohol intake is taken into account, the limit for men is ten units, which corresponds to five cans of beer. For women, the limit is seven units per day (four cans).

How much wine and spirits can I drink?

Of course, the amount of drink varies according to the alcohol content, as in glasses of wine and shots of distillate. According to the doctor, each 90 ml of wine is equivalent to 1.1 units of alcohol. A dose of distillate, about 35 ml, corresponds to two units.

Prado recalls that, for people who are going to drive or operate machinery, for example, there is no safe amount: they should not drink even a sip of alcohol.

What to do if you overindulge in drinking?

In the moment of excitement (and after a few drinks), it can be difficult to control your alcohol intake and end up binge drinking. In that case, the bill arrives the next day, and hangover symptoms do not take long to appear.

The medical clinic Patrícia Maira, from Hospital Anchieta, in Brasília, explains that hangovers happen due to the accumulation of toxic substances from alcohol in the liver, which can cause symptoms such as:

  • Headache;
  • Sickness;
  • General malaise;
  • Pain in the body and stomach;
  • Dehydration;
  • Lack of appetite;
  • Tremors;
  • Sweat;
  • Excess sleep.

Patrícia recommends that, in case of a hangover, the person stays at rest, drinks plenty of water and opts for a lighter diet.

“Depending on the symptoms, you can take a medicine for nausea or pain, but it is important to avoid the use of anti-inflammatory drugs, because this type of medicine can irritate the stomach lining and worsen the symptoms that already exist”, concludes the doctor. .
