John Ignatius Buzalithe ex-husband of the national deputy Caroline Piparo, insists on regaining his freedom. His lawyers presented a new request for extraordinary release before the Oral Criminal Court I of La Plata where the case for attempted murder is located after the ferocious accident of January 1, 2021.

Buzali is prosecuted by “attempted murder”, after running over two motorcyclists with his car, supposedly thinking they were the robbers who had attacked his wife moments before. He has been in preventive detention for two years, most of the time under house arrest with some outlets for family issues.

The case has already been elevated to oral trial. On two occasions the defense requested his release but it was rejected. In this new attempt, they maintain that there are no procedural dangers of escape or hindering the ongoing process that still does not have a trial date. The lawyers also insist that it is a case of minor injuries despite the fact that the Criminal Chamber of La Plata has already confirmed that it is an attempted intentional homicide.

Martin de Vargasa lawyer for one of the victims of the violent run over, expressed: “We oppose the release of Buzali, firstly, because they have already requested his release twice and it was rejected in the first and second instance. And fundamentally we oppose it because since they committed the fact that Buzali and Piparo permanently obstructed the investigation, they ran over two boys who were walking, left them stranded and fled, lied, accused innocent people and at 1:00 p.m. on January 1, she went all over the media accusing the boys of being the perpetrators of a robbery with which it was found that they had nothing to do with it, and later tried to disguise the fact as an accident, this indicates the clear desire to hinder the investigation, and for this reason we are going to strongly oppose any type of release” .

Other judicial sources consulted with access to the file indicated that “this new presentation is similar to the two that have already been rejected, but the defense is within its right to question what it considers at any opportune moment.”

THE CASE

Piparo denounced that in the early morning of January 1, 2021, she was assaulted by three couples of motorcycles on 47th Street, between 15 and 16, when her ex-husband parked the car to leave her father at home. According to the legislator, when she was going with her ex-husband to make the complaint aboard her black Fiat 500L with a white roof, they were again intercepted by what they believed were the same criminals who had assaulted them. At 21 and 40 Buzali rear-ended one of the motorcycles on which two young people were traveling (Louis Lavalle and a 17-year-old teenager) whom he left lying on the floor.

In his investigative statement, the legislator’s ex-husband stated that “what happened was a misfortune and an accident“, what “never” wanted “hurt nobody”but for the prosecutor his conduct showed “a total disregard for the result of his actions”. Buzali has been detained since January 9 by order of Judge Garmendia, who rejected the release request presented by his defense, which was ratified by the La Plata Court of Appeals. Last April, that Court of Appeals granted the house arrest.
