Cartographies of Displacement exhibition presented in Miami

MIAMI.- As part of the activities of Miami Art Week, the organization Ten North Group carries out the event The Art of Transformation: Global Africa, a meeting that proposes to enhance the diversity of diaspora communities, through the conceptualization of works of art.

The event will feature sample dedicated to Puerto Rico titled Cartographies of Displacementwhich brings together the work of 17 Puerto Rican artists who, through their respective practices, reflect on what occurs in the situations caused by displacement, something that has historically characterized the Caribbean.

The exhibition comments on the experiences that accumulate on a daily basis, the ways in which people live and negotiate with the forces that displace them, the changes that the landscape undergoes, politically and infrastructurally inside and outside the city, and in the ways in which geography is conceived inside and outside the archipelago.

Cartographies of Displacement will be open to the public December 6-10 at The Pavilion, 650 Ali Baba Ave., Opa-Locka, FL 33054.

Essence of the sample

The exhibition is curated by Helen Ceballos and Abdiel D. Segarra Ríos, who propose the exhibition as a setting for collective reflection to address, together with the artists and the public, conversations that link the works to the production of identity and the questioning of the hegemonic culture.

Experts assure that the particular case of Puerto Rico goes beyond the colonialism that for centuries has shaped its idiosyncrasy and the gentrification that is reconfiguring life in its neighborhoods in leaps and bounds.

At the same time, the exhibition explores the production processes of historical narratives and the right to memory in a scenario in which the local population is being forced to migrate. The works on display demonstrate the artists’ conviction to create cultural devices that reflect the contradictions and challenges, material and symbolic, that frame the life of Puerto Ricans inside and outside the territory.

The Art of Transformation: Global Africa It will also have four other projects: a sculpture pavilion, an installation of books aimed at blackness and a selection of works from Africa, the Caribbean and their diasporas. The latter are part of the art collection held by Ten North Group.

The event will feature live action and a Vogue workshop by Edrimael Delgado, as well as a screening of the feature film Fishbowldirected by Glorimar Marrero and an intervention by the academic, Carlos Rivera Santana.
