Acapulco.- Doctors from the ISSSTE Hospital in Acapulco had to complete a cesarean section with the emergency lamp because the electricity went out in the operating room.

In a video, a nurse participating in the surgical intervention is heard saying that the power plant does not arrive.

“Zero power plant, this is dark; we have the emergency lamp,” says the nurse, while another appears with a cell phone trying to light it.

Like, how long has it been since he didn’t arrive?, he asks.

“For a while, I think about 20 minutes,” answers another nurse, who also participates in the cesarean section.

According to versions of the workers of this hospital, it is recurring that there are blackouts, not only in the operating room, but in the entire building, because the power plant does not take over immediately.

Deficiencies in this ISSSTE hospital in Acapulco have surfaced after the earthquake on September 7, 2021, which caused structural damage and required repairs and the purchase of new equipment for several months.

In August 2022, the workers held protests and suspended consultations and surgeries to the beneficiaries in protest because a group of their colleagues were not paid their salary, they also demanded the repair of the air conditioning, the operating room, the acquisition of X-ray apparatus.

Administrative workers, doctors and nurses demand the construction of a new Hospital, but a third level one, with more beds and sufficient medical infrastructure.

Rocío Larumbe Gutiérrez, a member of the executive committee of the ISSSTE National Progressive Workers Union, confirmed the authenticity of that video that circulated on social networks where doctors and nurses are seen performing a cesarean section and the power goes out.

“That incident occurred 15 days ago, but the blackout lasted two minutes,” said Larumbe Gutiérrez.

“The deficiencies in the ISSSTE Hospital have been corrected little by little and we hope that soon the federal government will lay the first stone of what will be the new hospital,” said Rocío Larumbe, Secretary of Labor and Conflicts of the union.
