The traffic light continues to argue about basic child security. However, there are still various types of help for families today. which are these.
The basic child security is one of the largest projects of the traffic light coalition – and currently one of the biggest controversial issues. With it, from 2025, grants for The family bundled, the hurdles in applying are lowered and child poverty is combated.
Even before even one bill for the social benefit exists, a violent dispute has already broken out between the traffic light parties about the financing of the project. Family Minister Lisa Paus (Greens) assumes additional costs of twelve billion euros per year. Finance Minister Christian Lindner (FDP), on the other hand, sees little room for maneuver in the budget.
Child benefit is the best-known social benefit for families
Even today, families can have different ones social benefits apply for. In some cases, however, these are hardly known or the application process is very complicated. The Ministry of Family Affairs therefore estimates that significantly more families are entitled to support than they actually receive. But what grants are there?
The best-known social benefit for families is this child support. This is intended to ensure the basic care of children up to at least 18 years of age. On January 1, 2023, it was increased to 250 euros per child.

Child supplement is only used by a few families
In addition to child benefit, there is also the child supplement. It is aimed at families with lower incomes. Parents whose salary is sufficient for their own livelihood, but not or only just enough for that of their children, have a claim. However, the child supplement in particular is only rarely used. An inquiry by the left-wing parliamentary group in the Bundestag at the beginning of the year revealed that, according to estimates by the Federal Ministry for Family Affairs, the child supplement is only paid out for around 35 percent of the children who are entitled to it.
For separated or single parents there is also the so-called maintenance advance. This applies if one of the parents does not meet their maintenance obligations towards the child at all or only partially.

Families who receive child supplement and housing benefit can also receive benefits for Education and participation apply for. These subsidies are intended to enable children from lower-income families to use school and leisure activities. This includes, for example, support for participation in sports clubs, school trips or excursions.
Pregnant women in emergencies can also get help with the Federal Foundation Mother and Child apply for. An application for this must be made during pregnancy at a counseling center for pregnant women. (csr)
