Chile transfers the presidency of the Pacific Alliance to Peru, after Mexico's refusal

The bloc, made up of Chile, Colombia, Mexico and Peru, is a mechanism for economic and commercial integration that experienced unprecedented political tension after the president of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, declared that he did not want to hand over the presidency to Boluarte because , as he said, “I do not want to legitimize a coup.”

Following Mexico and according to the bloc’s statutes, the presidency during 2023 corresponded to Peru, but López Obrador refused to hand over the position to Boluarte, whom he described as a “spurious president.” Chile assumed the role of mediator and held the presidency of the bloc on June 28, which it handed over this day.

Van Klaveren explained that Chile took over temporarily to “contribute to integration”, in a decision agreed between Mexico, Peru and Chile.

Former Peruvian President Castillo has been in pretrial detention for three years while being investigated for alleged crimes of rebellion and corruption, since his removal from office on December 7 after unsuccessfully trying to dissolve Parliament.

The transfer to Peru was carried out in a private ceremony at the Chilean Ministry of Foreign Affairs attended by the foreign ministers of Peru and Chile, Ana Cecilia Gervasi and Alberto van Klaveren, respectively.
