After the consecration of La Scaloneta in Qatar, which installed the South American region at the top of global soccer, several countries came together to advance a common goal.
And against the wishes of the fans, and also of the leaders, in an act led by Claudio “Chiqui” Tapia, president of the AFA, the candidacy of Argentina, Uruguay, Chile and Paraguay to organize the 1930 World Cup was made official.
The event, which was attended by several of the ’78 and ’86 world champions, served to show the joint commitment of all the federations of the continent.
“History and passion will give us the possibility of hosting the 2030 World Cup,” said the head of the AFA as an introduction to the event that took place at the AFA premises in Ezeiza.
Along with Tapia were present the president of Conmebol, the Paraguayan Alejandro Domínguez; the National Secretary of Sport of Uruguay, Sebastián Bauzá; the Minister of Sports of Chile, Alexandra Benado Vergara; his partner from Paraguay, Diego Galeano Harrison; and the head of the local portfolio, Matías Lammens.
“We have a team and we are convinced. FIFA has the obligation to honor the memory of those who came before us, who believed big and made the first World Cup. Those men made it possible for us to have the exposure we have today, for football to have this greatness. If they were here today, they would be surprised at what football achieved with their dream,” added Tapia.
