Closing arguments wrap up in trial of man accused of killing police officer and elderly woman

Closing arguments wrapped up Wednesday in the trial of a man accused of killing a Massachusetts police officer and an elderly woman in 2018.

Emanuel Lopes, 25, is accused of murdering Weymouth Police Sgt. Michael Chesna and Vera Adams, 77, in July 2018, murders that shocked the South Shore community. Chesna left behind a wife and two small children.

The jury is expected to begin its deliberations on Wednesday afternoon.

The trial started about three weeks ago.

Previously, William Kendal lives in the Weymouth neighborhood where the deadly shooting occurred in July 2018 that killed police sergeant Michael Chesna and Vera Adams, a 77-year-old woman. Kendal says a rock broke a window in his house and then he heard multiple shots.

According to witnesses, Emanuel López first crashed his girlfriend’s vehicle and tried to flee on foot and when police sergeant Michael Chesna asked him to stop, lopes hit him on the head with a rock that knocked him to the ground. Later, López took the sergeant’s gun and shot him at least 8 times in the chest.

The defense party argues that Lopes suffers from a mental disorder.

Lopes faces two counts of murder, possession of a firearm without a license, destruction of property and reckless driving of a vehicle, according to authorities.

The trial is expected to last about four weeks. The judge has said that if the jurors decide that there was no criminal responsibility, Ella Lopes will spend the rest of her life in a mental health facility.

Weymouth residents honored the memory of Michael Chesna and Vera Adams.
