Hip-hop, jazz, and Afro-Caribbean, classical Indian, and contemporary dance merge in “Combination,” a show that premiered in Miami with companies from Martinique, the US, and Trinidad and Tobago.
Hosted by Peter London Global Dance (PLGD), a diversity-focused Miami company presents its contemporary dance performances at the Haitian Cultural Center, where “Combination” premiered as part of an international cultural partnership program. endorsed by Miami-Dade County.
This time PLGD’s partners are Metamorphosis Dance Company and Sat Kathak Kala Sangam from Trinidad and Tobago, as well as MD from Martinique, whose artistic director, David Milone, is directing the show along with Peter London, who before having his own company he was a principal dancer in the avant-garde company of Martha Graham and a teacher at The Alvin Ailey School in New York.
“Combination: Miami Heat Wave Ballet,” the show’s full title referring to the heat wave hitting Miami this July, features two world premieres.
The choreography “Children of the Underground,” created by London, follows the journey of Africans brought as slaves to the Caribbean and the United States; and the rituals that brought them to their new place in the world and gave rise to popular dances.
Exposes through hip-hop and contemporary dance a dramatic and passionate battle of street dancers to mark their turf, “Spectre” by MD Company is the other world premiere.
