Community of winemakers impacted by new fatal incident

The winery community is shocked after the murder of a 40-year-old man on Saturday night inside the deli located at 169th Street and Jamaica Avenue.

“People steal, also in stores, so many things happen here,” says a witness named Adrián.

This deli worker witnessed the attack and asked that we not show his face. He says the attacker robbed the victim after seeing him dead.

“I was hiding there behind the store and the other man who was robbing that man, I don’t know, took a knife and hit him in the neck, in the chest and everywhere, like five times and he died there on the floor. He stole the phone and left, he walked there on the street.”

He added that when he saw the situation he couldn’t do much.

“I can’t do anything because if you see two people fighting and one has a knife, you can’t do anything, you know.”

According to neighbors, a fight between two men started in front of a store and then the victim ran seeking refuge inside the deli.

“Very bad and sad because it can happen to anyone in the family and that is not fair for one to suffer pain from one moment to the next,” said Saúl Elías, a resident of the area.

Police received the call last night around 9:40 about an injured man inside the deli located on Jamaica Avenue, near the 103rd Precinct in Queens. Upon arrival, officers found an unconscious man. According to the police report, he received multiple stabs in the neck and shoulder. His death was certified at the scene.

The suspect fled the scene to the east side of Jamaica Avenue and was described as a man wearing a gray sweatshirt and black pants.

For his part, the spokesperson for the winery association, Fernando Mateo, reiterated the call that the union made to federal and local authorities to equip these businesses with greater security such as panic buttons and more cameras.

While the alarmed community asks for security in the area since they say they feel afraid walking at night.

“And concern for the children. I would say that we would need more police in this area, that is, despite the fact that the precinct is close here and things happen, and the truth is that that is very scary,” says Lubia Serech, a resident of the area.

“That they have a little more control and that they help us well because they say this has not been experienced before and now it is being experienced everywhere,” says Martha Tigasi, a resident of the area.

Police continue to investigate this case and ask the community if you have any information to call 1-800-57 PISTA.
