Over the weekend we were able to report that Sega was planning to buy Angry Birds developer Rovio, and now we can confirm that the deal is done. Namely, Sega announced on Monday that they made an offer (which was accepted by Rovio) of 776 million dollars (just north of 8 billion kroner), and this should be around twenty percent more per share than what the price was before.

Sega CEO Haruki Satomi said that the reason behind the acquisition is to expand its presence in the gaming industry’s mobile market, as it sees great potential in the area in the coming years:

“In the rapidly growing global gaming market, the mobile gaming market has especially high potential, and it has been Sega’s long-term goal to accelerate its expansion in this field,

Sega also points out that the takeover has been a so-called “friendly takeover” as Rovio’s board welcomed the generous offer from Sega without any major protests.

SEK 8 billion… That’s a lot of money.
