The Center for Astronomy, Astrophysics and Geophysics Research announced that a very bright meteor fell on the night of Sunday May 7, 2023around 11:59 p.m. local time.

The phenomenon has been observed by many citizens in different parts of the country. The fireball was very bright and produced a trail of light continues for several seconds from the west side towards the southeast.

It is a celestial body that was picked up by the gravitational force of the Earth and then entered the atmosphere of our planet at supersonic speed.

According to preliminary calculations, the mass of the meteorite is estimated at about 10 kilograms and the height of the fireball at the first flash of light was evaluated about 25 to 40 kilometers in the sky.

The Center would like to reassure citizens that this natural astronomical phenomenon regularly occurs around the world about 10 times a year, with an energy approximately similar to that of the meteor that was observed. It is important to note that this phenomenon has no connection with seismic activity.

A common phenomenon

Re-entry of celestial objects is a natural event that occurs when fragments of rocks or metal from interplanetary space enter the earth’s atmosphere.

These fragments move at extremely high speedsresulting in intense friction with the air, which creates ano trail of fire visible from the ground. This trail is often called a “shooting star” and can be seen in the night sky when conditions are good.

Scientists study meteorites, the name given to these fragments once they hit the ground, to better understand the composition of celestial bodies who created them and to explore the evolution of our solar system. This phenomenon remains fascinating and important for the study of astronomy.
