Crash claims one person's life and leaves another injured in Cranston

One person was killed and another seriously injured later in a crash involving two pickup trucks Monday night in Cranston, Rhode Island.

Cranston police confirmed the details to WJARand said the trucks appeared to be driving in opposite directions when one of the vehicles crossed the double yellow line and collided with the other truck on Scituate Avenue.

Rescuers used special tools to remove two people from one of the vehicles, police told WJAR. One died and the other was taken to a hospital with serious injuries.

The driver of the second van was not injured, police said.

According to police, first responders were trying to determine how to get one of the vans off the scene as it had highly flammable oxygen tanks, three of which were leaking, reports WJAR.

Images from the scene showed both trucks sustained extensive front-end damage.

Part of Scituate Avenue was closed to traffic following the fatal accident.

Authorities have not identified the person who died. Police have not said what they believe caused a driver to cross into oncoming traffic. An investigation into what happened is ongoing.
