For two evenings, Arte offers the Danish mini-series Bonus Cry Wolf (Our opinion). The story: Holly (played by Flora Ofelia), a 14-year-old girl, accused her stepfather of violence in a letter dissertation. Social services alerted, a social worker named Larse (Bjarne Henriksen) arranges to urgently place Holly and her brother in foster care. Doubts are present throughout the episodes. Because, no trace is present on the body of the young girl. All the other family members deny the accusations made by the teenager. Did the girl lie? Is this more than strikingly realistic story inspired by a true story?

A subject that is still too little discussed, family violence, like other forms of violence, is difficult to discuss. However, if the series seems faithful to reality, it is not a true story. Indeed, the designer was inspired by the American series The Night of… which talks about the judicial system around a specific case. Interviewed as part of the Series Mania Festival, Maja Jul Larsen says she has a kind of “fascination” for social workers. “They do a very difficult job of trying to figure out what’s going on, within the private lives of families, and they also have the power to remove children from their homes.” she says.

Cry Wolf: the series larger than life
In order to make it even more real, Maja Jul Larsen did a field survey. In particular, she exchanged a lot with social workers but also psychologists. But the designer didn’t stop there… She also tackled the other side of the iceberg by meeting parents whose children have been placed, and of course by talking with the children themselves. even placed in foster care. This investigation lasted about a year, and allowed the talented creator to fully understand the child protection system and its complex structure.
