Grumpy skin, soft core – that’s how crime fans knew “Law & Order” star Richard Belzer.
Now the actor has died at the age of 78. The cause of death is not yet known.
The news of the cult cop’s death was confirmed by Belzer’s former “Saturday Night Live” colleague Laraine Newman (70). Both had been in front of the camera for the comedy show in the 1970s and 1980s.
In a tweet, Newman wrote: “So saddened to hear of Richard Belzer’s passing. I loved this guy so much. He was one of my first friends when I came to New York to shoot Saturday Night Live.”
Every week they went out to eat lobster together, Belzer was one of the funniest people she had ever met. The comedienne said goodbye with the words “rest in peace, dearest.”
The actor and stand-up comedian achieved cult status through his role as Detective John Munch in the series “Law & Order: SVU”. He has appeared in over 300 episodes since 1996. In 2016, his character was dropped from the show.
