Berlin’s deputy FDP state chairman Sebastian Czaja has announced his candidacy for the FDP federal executive board. Czaja told the dpa news agency on Wednesday that he had decided to apply for a seat on the federal executive board at the federal party conference at the weekend.

In this role and also as state deputy, he wants to continue to be a loud, liberal voice in Berlin. Czaja was previously chairman of the FDP parliamentary group in the Berlin House of Representatives and the top candidate of the FDP in the state parliament elections in February, which narrowly missed out on re-entering.

“Working towards more freedom, more progress and more prosperity does not always run in a straight line. There are setbacks, there are ups and downs,” said Czaja. “I’ve never seen politics just as a job, and there are many ways to fight for your own ideas and beliefs.”

Organized liberalism in Berlin is also not idle outside of the state parliament. “The FDP is part of the federal government, and we will continue to be a part of the city in Berlin,” said Czaja, whose brother Mario is Secretary General of the federal CDU.

The Berlin FDP, until then one of three opposition parties, had only received 4.6 percent of the votes in the House of Representatives elections and thus failed at the 5 percent hurdle. Shortly thereafter, Sebastian Czaja declared that he would take all responsibility for his party’s results. At the same time, he announced that he wanted to remain active in Berlin politics. (dpa)
