Democratic representatives call the buoys installed on the Texas border to prevent the passage of migrants "inhumane"

The buoys installed in the Rio Grande between the Texas border with Mexico and other anti-immigrant measures were described as “inhumane” and “barbaric” by Democratic members of the United States House of Representatives who visited the controversial barrier.

The delegation, led by Joaquín Castro, toured the Eagle Pass sector, where the buoys were installed in mid-July. as part of Texas Governor Greg Abbott’s Operation Lone Star.

“What we have seen today at Eagle Pass is the definition of inhumanity”Castro warned in a press conference after the tour, which included conversations with ranchers, area residents and activists opposed to the buoys, barbed wire fences and the presence of the National Guard in the area.

noted that Despite a decline in border crossings, Governor Abbott’s “barbaric campaign of cruelty against migrants” remains in force.

The Congress men Tony Cárdenas, Sylvia García and Sheila Jackson Lee were part of the delegation, which demanded that the Government of President Joe Biden take urgent action to end the measures from Abbott.

García highlighted the danger posed by the buoys due to their size and the knives that are in the middle of them. “It is awful”said the congresswoman, who confessed to having cried when she saw the barrier. “I have never seen anything like this in this country.”

Also criticized spokespersons for the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) with whom the delegation had spoken for downplaying the risk posed by the barrier. “They said the buoys are just floating. Those buoys are not only floating, they are a risk.”

The body of a Honduran migrant was found last week trapped on the south side of the 980-foot buoy barrier. (300 meters). In this regard, the DPS said the migrant appeared to have drowned upstream and floated toward the buoys.

Castro said that the actions taken by Abbott “are intentionally designed to injure, maim and kill migrants and rob them of their legal right to seek asylum in the United States.”

The US Department of Justice has sued Texas over the installation of the buoys. A hearing in the case will be held on August 22 in a federal court handling the case.
