Denisse Ahumada's lawyer says that the councilor lives humbly and acted under threat

Samuel Reyes, attorney for Reynosa councilor Denisse Ahumada Martínez, assured Telemundo 40 by telephone that his client lives humbly, is worried about his daughters, and that he acted under threat.

Currently, Ahumada Martínez remains incarcerated in Hidalgo County and it is unknown when she will be transferred to Brooks County, the attorney said. In said jurisdiction, the councilor will face a case for possession of controlled substances, according to her arrest record in Hidalgo County.

The federal charges against Ahumada Martínez were dismissed by Judge Juan F. Alanis on Thursday, June 15, after no probable cause was found against him. For his part, the lawyer acknowledged that the state authorities have that right.

“I have seen in the past that when the feds reject the case and they are not going to go forward, the state sometimes lifts the case,” Reyes explained. However, she stressed that in the case of Ahumada Martínez, she was under “threat” when she transported the drugs.

The councilor allegedly did not know that he was carrying drugs

Regarding the fact that this was not the first time that the councilor had introduced drugs into the United States, the lawyer assured that his client “never knew what he had or if he had, because (in) the first (of the attempts) the authorities never caught the first vehicle and she didn’t know what that vehicle had or if it had anything.

As expected, finding herself incarcerated and facing a process that could send her several years in prison is a very “heavy” matter to bear. However, although she is fine, the councilor is worried about her daughters.

In addition, he stated that those who are responsible for the crime and drugs are the people who “threatened” his client. She also stressed that Ahumada Martínez has never had problems with the law, she lives humbly and tries to help her town as a councilor.

The official was initially arrested on June 10 at the Falfurrias checkpoint in Texas with just over 92 pounds of cocaine hidden in the vehicle she was driving, according to federal court documents in McAllen. It is in this letter that it is stated that it was not the first time that the woman transported drugs across the border.

Authorities initially indicated that approximately forty-two kilograms (92 pounds) of suspected cocaine were discovered in various locations in the vehicle, including the seats and door panels.

The next step that the councilor’s defense plans to take is to request a bond for her client, to which she says, she is entitled.
