Bochum-Wattenscheid.
A farmer from Wattenscheid opened a self-service farm shop a few days ago. He relies on the honesty of the customers – and has already been disappointed.

  • Farmer Patrick Appelbaum from Wattenscheid has had a self-service farm shop for a few days
  • Various regional products are available in a wooden hut every day from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m
  • The farmer relies on the honesty of the customers – and has already been disappointed

The wooden house is in an idyllic, rural location in Wattenscheid-Sevinghausen – since Maundy Thursday, farmer Patrick Appelbaum’s new self-service farm shop has been open daily from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m., including Sundays and public holidays. The farmer relies on the honesty of the customers for his new sales house – and was already disappointed in the first few days.

Patrick Appelbaum describes the sales process as follows: “You enter the self-service farm shop, look for your products, add up the individual prices that are on the products, and then you either throw the correct money into the till or you scan the QR code and pay cashless via Paypal.” It is important for customers: “The whole thing is based on trust. So please be honest with us. This is the only way the concept can work.”

Self-service farm shop open for three days – and twice the cash register is wrong

Less than three full days have passed since the opening, when the farmer must already be clear on Facebook: “It has already happened twice that money is missing from the cash register,” Appelbaum wrote on Holy Saturday. “That’s not how the concept works. If not everyone is really honest with us, the self-service farm shop will have to be closed again. ”He will now give the matter a few more days. But if things continue like this, he sees no future. “That’s really a pity.”

In the self-service farm there are asparagus, eggs and potatoes

The product range in the self-service farm shop is diverse and rich, according to Patrick Appelbaum, currently from field-fresh asparagus (peeled and packaged) to fresh free-range eggs from the region, potatoes from the region, non-alcoholic strawberry secco (the alcoholic strawberry and strawberry Rhubarb secco can only be sold in consultation for reasons of youth protection) to homemade strawberry fruit spread. Egg liqueur from Hof Wibbecke is available on advance order.

Appelbaum emphasizes: “Of course we will also have our own fresh strawberries and raspberries soon.” We are trying to constantly expand the range of products, and there will always be up-to-date information on the Facebook page. “If the customers have any suggestions, they are welcome to let us know.”

A look at the page can prevent disappointment before you spontaneously set off to do your shopping: On the evening of Easter Sunday, Appelbaum announced that asparagus is currently sold out, but will be available again next weekend, starting Friday.

Self-service farm shop in Wattenscheid: Lots of encouragement for farmers online

Despite the disillusionment of the first few days about the unknown cheaters, Appelbaum is “delighted at how well the farm shop is being accepted”. He thanks all honest customers for their purchase, he writes on Facebook – and reaps encouragement.

“I was there today and dutifully threw in my three euros,” writes a user. Another states that it even put more in the till than was actually necessary. Many commentators are unsurprised by the audacity of their fellow human beings. “Unfortunately, that was to be expected,” they write, or: “In today’s society, that was unfortunately clear.”

Self-service farm shop: In den Höfe 4, on the hiking trail (behind the Helfs Hof local history museum). The opening times are daily, including public holidays, from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. Access is via Berliner Straße / Burgstraße / Helfstraße / In den Höfen or via Wattenscheider Hellweg / Sevinghauser Weg / In den Höfen.
