The original series has just arrived at Globoplay Nightclub Kiss – The Tragedy of Santa Mariawhich tells the story of one of the most tragic incidents in Brazil and the world.
Exactly 10 years ago, the Kiss nightclub caught fire after the band that was performing lit fireworks during the show. The fire began to burn a foam that lined the ceiling, causing not only the destruction of the place but also releasing highly toxic smoke.
The Kiss nightclub accident left more than 600 people injured and killed 242. The Globoplay documentary, then, recounts all the events that followed the tragedy and how the case has been handled in court until today, a decade later.

Nightclub Kiss – The Tragedy of Santa Maria is a five-episode documentary series hosted and directed by Marcelo Canellas, a TV Globo reporter who grew up in Santa Maria, Rio Grande do Sul. The journalist also studied at the federal university that many of the victims attended.
Canellas says that the initial idea for the documentary was to tell the story of the tragedy using the trial as a backdrop, imagining that there would soon be an outcome, but it was annulled.
“It’s a story of the struggle of a group of mothers, fathers and survivors for justice. And how that suffering was being ground over time and returning as if it were something endless”, explains the reporter.
The documentary series features never-before-seen footage of the fire and witness testimonies, telling what happened the night of the incident and afterwards from the point of view of survivors and families who lost their children. Marcelo Canellas sees in the production a way of exposing legal problems and guaranteeing the victims’ parents that their stories are not forgotten.
