While cooking the next issue of the manga of Dragon Ball Super some interesting ones are revealed that enrich the context of the story behind the conception of Goten and Trunks’ peculiar superhero costumes in the most recent volume of the manga.

The followers of the printed version of Dragon Ball Super are celebrating with the start of their new arc in the plot known as Super Hero. A name that betrays the initial approach to its story but also creates confusion thanks to the title of the most recent film.

And as if that were not enough, at the same time, this situation requires a high dose of patience from the followers. Since both Akira Toriyama, the original creator of this franchise, and Toyotaro, the main illustrator behind this new era of manga, have chosen to present a different narrative without following a linear sequence in the chronology of events.

With all that this entails in a context where the publication of each new issue of the manga is relatively spaced apart. So it will be necessary to wait some time to see how the gaps between the end of the Granola arc and the plot of the Super Hero tape are filled.

Toyotaro reveals how Goten and Trunks’ costumes were born in Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero

Toyotaro and himself Akira Toriyama have managed to keep their fans’ spirits high by posting some materials revealing the manga’s creative process, as well as sketches from past character designs in other sagas.

It is therefore a strategy so that the wait does not feel so heavy. But in the process, important information has also been learned that helps to better understand some creative and aesthetic decisions. Like for example the issue with the strange vigilante outfits that Goten and Trunks wear in the first issue of Super Hero:

In an interview with the official site of dragonball Toyotaro has finally revealed all the details behind the creation of these costumes, where it is finally clear to us that their design was intentionally unattractive as an element of the plot and development of these two characters.

It just so happens that Akira Toriyama actually designed the superhero costumes Trunks and Goten wear in the new arc, all detailed in pencil by the master from an early draft by Toyotaro.

So they ended up with this design because the author wanted them to look a bit retro but “not cool”, to bring out the comedic effect of these two guys believing they look great in that outfit.

So in a way it’s a direct tribute to the beginning of the Majin Buu arc in Dragon Ball Z, where Gohan used an equally ridiculous costume to embody the Great Saiyaman convinced he looked great.
