NEW YORK — Police have identified a man facing a long list of charges after he allegedly struck several cars and a group of pedestrians walking near a Manhattan intersection while trying to flee a traffic stop, New York Police said. York.
Kyle Fernandez was charged with 12 counts each of reckless endangerment and leaving the scene of an accident, police said Wednesday. He was also charged with possession of stolen property, driving without a license, resisting arrest, operating a motor vehicle under the influence of drugs, failing to obey a police officer and more.
Information for Fernández’s 20-year-old lawyer was not immediately available. A total of 10 people were injured during the Tuesday night rush hour incident in which Fernandez tried to flee when police pulled him over for possibly driving a stolen vehicle.
Fernández allegedly took off and crashed into a group of people in Lexington Ave. and East 42nd Street nearly grand central terminal In the city center. Police said the driver initially struck a cyclist before colliding with a taxi. The suspect then ran onto a sidewalk and struck several pedestrians before making a U-turn and traveling the wrong way on Lexington Avenue.
The chaos came to an end after Fernandez allegedly collided with another car in what appeared to be a head-on collision. Witnesses then held him until police arrived on the scene and detained Fernández. Between the multiple collisions and pedestrian strikes, police said 10 people were injured.
None of the victims involved in the car crash suffered life-threatening injuries, according to the sources. Some of the victims were between the ages of 5 and 7, the sources said.
Police officials later said the vehicle had been reported stolen in the Bronx on July 31.
