Brownsville, EU.- The driver who killed 8 migrants in Brownsville, Texas, by hitting them with his car, has been charged with involuntary manslaughter, police said.

Authorities believe the driver, 34-year-old George Alvarez, lost control after running a red light yesterday morning and struck a crowd of Venezuelans waiting outside a migrant center.

The police chief said Alvarez was charged with eight counts of manslaughter and 10 counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

Migrant shelter director Victor Maldonado said the SUV sped toward the sidewalk, flipped over, and continued moving about 200 feet.

Some people walking on the sidewalk about 30 feet from the main group were also injured, Maldonado added.

Witnesses detained the driver as he tried to escape and held him until police arrived, they added.
