Researchers have developed a drug that has the potential to enable longer, healthier aging.

Decreased insulin and insulin-like growth factor-1 signaling prolongs the lifespan of invertebrates; however, in mammals, this prolongation is not so certain.

This is how the description begins, in a study published recently in the magazine Nature Agingwhich seeks to increase the average life expectancy of humans.

The analysis shows evidence that dietary supplementation with the phosphoinositide 3-kinase inhibitor (PI3Ki), starting in middle age, extends the average and maximum lifespan of mice – more visible in females.

Long-term treatment with PI3Ki was well tolerated and made the mice stronger and with bigger balance. Coordination got better improved.

These results suggest that, although pharmacological suppression of insulin receptor (IR)/insulin-like growth factor receptor (IGFR) targets may represent a promising approach to delaying some aspects of aging, one should take into account caution in the passage of this medication to humans.

were evident negative impacts on common markers of human aging, including reductions in bone mass and mild hyperglycemia.

The medicine, details the portal SciTechDailyserved as a cancer treatment for healthy middle-aged (one year old) mice.

Several scientific evidences have already shown that PI3Ki is useful for fight canceras many cancers have excessive activation of this pathway.

the medicine increased life expectancy of the rats in an average of 10%bringing it to about three years.

The drug thus increased the average life expectancy and quality of life of the mice, making aging healthier.

But, warns the leader of this team of scientists, Troy Merry: “We are not suggesting that anyone should start taking this medicine. for a long term to extend the shelf life, as there are some side effects.”

However, this study identifies crucial aging mechanisms that will be useful in long-term efforts to increase lifespan and health.
