Poland’s President Andrzej Duda announced further military support for Ukraine in Vienna today. So far, military goods worth three billion euros have been delivered.

“We are not intimidated by the stationing of Russian nuclear weapons in Belarus, because we are united,” said Duda at a press conference with Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen.

Poland respects Austrian neutrality, but would be happy if Austria could deliver more non-military goods such as protective vests and masks, said Duda.

Van der Bellen said there was agreement “that we as the European Union continue to stand united behind a democratic Ukraine”. The Federal President also announced that he would take care of supporting Ukraine in demining.

Both Presidents also agreed on the further development of economic cooperation. Duda also thanked Van der Bellen that Austria was involved in commemorating the victims of National Socialist terror in the former Mauthausen subcamp in Gusen. Duda announced that Poland wanted to set up a permanent exhibition there in memory of the 20,000 Poles murdered there.

Duda’s schedule also included meetings with Chancellor Karl Nehammer and President of the National Council Wolfgang Sobotka (both ÖVP). In addition to bilateral relations, one of the major issues here is likely to be the war in Ukraine.
