Düsseldorf.
Four people were injured in an accident with a tram in Düsseldorf on Wednesday. A truck rammed the train, its tank tore open.

When a truck collided with a tram, four people were slightly injured in Düsseldorf on Wednesday, including the tram driver. For reasons that have not yet been clarified, the truck collided with the train at a large intersection. A diesel tank also ruptured.

The U73 tram line was traveling in the direction of Gerresheim at around 1 p.m. when a semitrailer truck, probably coming from the direction of the metro, suddenly rammed the front part at the Grafenberg Allee/Simrockstraße intersection. The superstructure of the front part of the train, which weighed tons, was lifted off the rails and pushed several meters over the crossing, where it lay across the rails in the opposite direction.

Tram accident: the route to Gerresheim was closed for almost four hours

When asked, the Rheinbahn could not say how many people were on the train. The tram route to Grafenberg and Gerresheim was closed for almost four hours, the Rheinbahn announced. Trains on lines U83 and 709 also had to turn around beforehand. The NF8U type train was finally put back on the rails and driven to the Lierenfeld depot in the late afternoon. The damage must now be assessed there.

The tram connection to and from Ratingen, which also runs via Simrockstraße, was not affected by the accident. Other trains were diverted via the route so that traffic in the city center could continue, the Rheinbahn said on request. Some traffic jams formed around the scene of the accident.

At the scene of the accident, the fire brigade also had to ensure that spilled diesel on the road was tied up with a special agent and the remaining fuel pumped out of the truck tank.

The police are investigating the cause of the accident.
