Volkswagen’s new luxury electric car ID.7
Volkswagen will launch the ID.7 production version in the second quarter of 2023. This will be the sixth model in the ID. Family based on Volkswagen’s MEB platform and the second globally launched electric car after the ID.4. ID.7 will be launched in three major markets: China, Europe and North America. The sneak peek at CES didn’t reveal any new information about the ID.7’s drive technology. Volkswagen is merely repeating what is already known, that the highly efficient electric sedan will have a range of “up to around 700 kilometers”, as measured by the WLTP standard. The German automaker has revealed the wheelbase of the new sedan, which is 2.97 meters, which is on par with the ID.Buzz (2.99 meters) and significantly higher than that of the ID.4/ID.5 (2.77 meters). Innoviz360 LiDAR from Innoviz Technologies
Innoviz Technologies Ltd., an Israeli high-performance LiDAR sensor (LiDAR) company, announced the launch and demonstration of the Innoviz360, the newest member of its high-performance Innoviz LiDAR series, which offers higher performance at significantly lower cost. Innoviz360’s innovative design is based on a new approach that overcomes the barriers of existing rotating LiDARs, which are limited in performance and expensive and bulky.
The new lightweight Innoviz360 lidar can achieve up to 1280 scan lines per frame, and the frame rate is configurable, the resolution is 0.05° x 0.05°, and the scanning distance is 300 meters. Innoviz360’s design uses most of InnovizTwo’s hardware improvements, including single lasers, detectors and application-specific integrated circuits (ASICs), and will benefit from InnovizTwo’s economies of scale. Innoviz360’s high resolution, high vertical field of view and low cost will help overcome key challenges faced by original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) to help them achieve L4-L5 in applications such as self-driving taxis, shuttles, trucks and delivery vehicles level of autonomous driving. Innoviz360 also enables autonomy in non-automotive applications such as heavy machinery, smart cities, logistics, construction, maritime and more.
Harman Ready Vision Augmented Reality Head-Up Display
Samsung’s automotive technology subsidiary, Harman, exhibited products that are now ready for OEM integration. These include a new augmented reality heads-up display, among other interesting features. So-called Harman Ready Vision can replace more and more screens in modern cars. It takes the shape of a large color head-up display with traditional hardware, featuring an edge-to-edge display and a large field of view. New here is augmented reality software that “delivers the right content at the right time, with the right visual detail”. Or, put simply, Harman wants to provide drivers with only the information they have while driving, in a form that is easy to read and understand.
Another interesting new technology from the company is Harman Ready Care, described as “the industry’s first closed-loop technology” that tracks a driver’s level of attention and concentration on the road. Using artificial intelligence and machine learning, the system compares driver behavior in focused and distracted states and issues alerts to help the driver mitigate dangerous situations on the road. Interestingly, there are sensors that can non-contact measure a driver’s vital signs to determine their state of health. Another new safety feature is a so-called sound and vibration sensor with external microphones, which can detect things like emergency vehicle sirens, broken glass and vehicle collisions. External microphones can be used for communication between passengers and emergency vehicles.
Toyota brings MX221 self-driving car and Moox concept car
Toyota showcased two mobility-as-a-service (MaaS) concepts that offer a glimpse into the fabric of the future. The first concept is called the MX221, and it’s envisioned as a ride-hailing vehicle with a Level 4 autonomous driving system. The concept embraces the idea of ”variety” and features reconfigurable interiors. The first configuration is called MX Pass, and it features four seats in a traditional two-row configuration. The MX Plus configuration also has two rows of seats, but they face each other. MX Access models come with wheelchairs, while MX Prime focuses on luxury, as the car’s interior can feature up to two high-tech seats with power reclining, leg rests, and a deployable table with a number pad. All four configurations appear to have a front-folding seat that folds away when not needed.
Since the concept is designed for ride-hailing, seat upholstery and carpet can be easily replaced. The concept also boasts UV-C sanitizers, an in-cabin monitoring system and a fold-out entertainment system. Other highlights include illuminated door panels and a small infotainment system that displays vehicle and passenger information. The exterior is relatively plain by comparison, but it has covered wheels and electric sliding doors. They are linked to digital displays in the side windows, as well as a rear LED panel that communicates with other road users by displaying messages such as “stop carefully”.
The Moox concept is envisioned as a fully autonomous Level 5 vehicle. Essentially a mobile box, hence the name, the concept is conceived to suit a variety of applications from business and dining to entertainment. Wellness Edition uses sensors in the seat and armrests to determine your fatigue and stress levels. If you’re stressed, Moox can calm you down by playing forest videos on the display. When this happens, the lighting and sound system change to mimic the feel of the forest, while a “relaxing aroma” is released. And if that’s a little too boring, occupants can use their hands and arms as controllers to play games, thanks to gesture recognition technology.
