“Twitter has been informed by the Turkish government that access [au réseau social] will soon be reactivated”, announced Elon Musk in a tweet published overnight from Wednesday to Thursday. For several hours, millions of Turkish Internet users have not been able to access the social network, access to which has been restricted by the authorities.

An initiative which is far from being the first, in a country where social networks are regularly blocked when broadcasting content critical of the government.

This blockage follows to the terrible earthquake which struck the country, and which caused thousands of victims. On Twitter, many Internet users criticized the Turkish authorities for their reaction after the natural disaster.

Internet governance watchdog netblocks.org pointed out that access to Twitter was restricted “through several internet service providers in Turkey”.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who visited the province of Hatay (south), one of the most affected, on the Syrian border, recognized “gaps” in the response to the earthquake.

Shortly after the earthquake, Elon Musk, owner and boss of Twitter, offered to help Turkey through Starlink, its satellite internet connection system. A proposal declined by the Turkish authorities.
