Frozen herbal blends are very popular for cooking: They have a long shelf life and are easy to use. Eco test has examined 17 products more closely – and in the product of Edeka made an unwanted find.

Danger for the liver: plant toxin discovered in frozen product

the “Edeka Organic 8 Herb Mixture” contains a plant toxin, as a laboratory study showed. Specifically, it is a “greatly increased” salary pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PA). PA are natural substances that form in plants and serve to protect against animals. Such plants often grow as weeds between herbs or lettuce – and are therefore often harvested at the same time.

This was probably also the case with the Edeka herbal mixture: the PA probably found its way into the goods via an ingredient. The spice plant borage forms the PA lycopsamine N-oxide. Certain PAs can pose a health risk for humans: “It is not the pyrrolizidine alkaloids themselves that are harmful, but their breakdown products in the liver. Certain PAs can damage the liver“, explains the consumer center.

Animal experiments on rats also showed that PA change the genetic material in cells and the formation of cancer cells may require. “It is suspected that PA can also have this effect in the human body”.

Grade “poor”: Edeka responds to allegations

Edeka was surprised by the allegations and replied. A supplier’s report shows that the raw materials burned burnet, chervil and cress do not contain any PA.

from Eco test there is still a strong point deduction. Because, from the portal’s point of view, the product contains “greatly increased” levels of PA, it is only sufficient for the verdict “inadequate”. In the laboratory, the testers found PA in six other frozen herbs – albeit in smaller quantities. In addition, the laboratory team discovered in nine of the herbal mixtures pesticides – points were deducted for that too.
