The government decides to authorize the import of laying hens
Thus, during a meeting which brought together, this Tuesday, January 17, 2023, the director of agricultural production within the Ministry of Agriculture and representatives of the Interprofessional Council for the Poultry Sector (CNIFA), — the two parties agreed to reactivate the specifications relating to the import of laying hens . The authorization aims to cover 60% of national needs.
This decision comes after the finding of a very significant drop in the number of laying hens in Algeria and the negative impact of this situation on egg prices and the purchasing power of citizens. Indeed, as we mentioned in a previous article, if Algeria had 40 million laying hens in 2019, today, their number is divided by 5and barely reached 8 million, a drop of 80%.

Moreover, Abderrazak Abdellaoui, member of CNIFA, explained on the columns of Ennahar that the soaring price of eggs finds its reasons in two factors: (1) the law of supply and demand; (2) the crisis that the market is going through is global because of bird flu that killed millions of laying hens. “Even France and neighboring countries are experiencing the same situation,” said the professional in the poultry sector.
Egg prices: Apoce announces that the first results of the boycott campaign
In response to the unprecedented increase in the price of eggs on the Algerian market, consumers have undertaken to launch a vast boycott campaign on social networks. An initiative that the Association for Consumer Protection and Guidance (APOCE) has supported and encouraged.

Today the association and its president, Mustapha Zebdi, announced on their respective Facebook pages that the boycott campaign is beginning to bear fruit since the price of the egg tray on the wholesale market fell by 70 DA.
Moreover,other products have seen their prices soar in recent days. Thus the kilogram of peanuts went from 400 DA to 530 DA; the vegecao milk chocolate bar sells for 350 DA, the 500 gram box of margarine costs no less than 220 DA and the smen 450 DA. If egg prices do not go down, cakes may become expensive during the next Ramadan!
