Egg through the skies: increased 37% in Cancun
Due to the sanitary restrictions that have taken place in Yucatan the price of the egg has skyrocketed up to 37 percent so far this year, as stated by the sellers of Mercado 23.
This place that is located in the center of the city is one of the points that maintains the sale of eggs at competitive prices, that is, at low prices compared to other establishments. Currently the price of a rack of eggs is between 110 and 125 pesos, depending on the quality and size of the product.
“It has been 15 days since the price went up for the last time, but now the egg rack is at 125, which is 30 eggs, compared to January it has gone up in price, because the price of the egg when the year began was 78 pesos the fence,” he said. In January the price of the egg was around 78 pesos, which translates to a unit price of 2.6 pesos each one of the pieces, while currently the rack costs between 110 and 125, which gives an average per piece of 3.60 to 4.20 each unit, increasing a considerable amount in the first six weeks of the year.

Outside Mercado 23, free-range eggs are sold, as well as so-called organic eggs, which can cost up to 15 pesos each, being the most expensive in the surrounding area.
Julio, who sells in a store in the same market, pointed out that they have decided to reduce the amount of order because people have started to buy less quantity of egg due to the price that has been increasing in recent weeks.
“Before we sold more but now people buy by the piece only the ones they are going to use that day.”
