CDMX.- If the docuseries El Buki: Las Letras de Mi Historia generates interest in the revelations of Marco Antonio Solís about his status as an immigrant in the United States, the consolidation and dissolution of Los Bukis and some interpersonal relationships that went from stormy to friendly, which happened behind the scenes gives it extra value.

Álvaro Curiel de Icaza, director of the feature film recently released on Prime Video, revealed that the soccer player Diego Armando Maradona was about to offer his testimony about the Michoacan idol, and he also considers himself lucky to have collected the latest interviews given by Armando Manzanero and Diego Verdaguer, also deceased.

“We did it in times of pandemic, and how bad would the issue of the pandemic be that Diego and Don Armando left us (at that time). And well, we were about to achieve Maradona: Marco looked for him, told him: ‘I want you to be interviewed’, and he agreed.

“He really liked his music, and days after interviewing him we already had his confirmation, and we didn’t know if it would happen or not. Because of the travel issue, it was not taking a plane (to Buenos Aires) and that’s it. A friend of mine was going to co-direct, and I, remotely and days before we received the news that Maradona died (in November 2020),” Curiel de Icaza said in an interview.

impact testimonials

Narrated in an entertaining and friendly way, the audiovisual material focuses on testimonials about the impact of the 63-year-old singer-songwriter in the entertainment industry, and is spoken by Marc Anthony, Ana Bárbara, Emilio Estefan, Fher Olvera (Maná) and Angélica María , among other artists.

Álvaro, son of the journalist Claudia de Icaza and the musician Francisco Curiel, spoke that he came to Marco Antonio Solís due to chance circumstances, since they had previously met, when he directed the promotions for La Voz México, a show in which the musician served as coach.

“The first film (of the Buki) was directed by my grandfather, Federico Curiel, Las Musiqueras (1981), and the song was made by my father. In La Voz I met him, we talked and he was very kind.

“During the pandemic, he said that he wanted to talk for the first time, talk about his life, and he remembered that I had worked with him, about my musical background, and there was a very important connection. His team spoke to me, I asked them to have a long conversation with him and we did it”, explained Curiel de Icaza.

Director of the series Until I Met You and The Dragon: The Return of the Warrior, among others, Álvaro emphasized that both the author of “The Worst of My Failures” and “If You Had Not Gone” and he wanted a formal job and away from gossip or controversies related to Marisela or Beatriz Adriana, with whom he collaborated.

“Far from going into those issues, I wanted to do it from a personal point of view, with a loving opinion. He had (offers) from television stations and I told him: ‘let them pay you’, and his answer was: ‘I’m not interested I don’t want tabloids’.

“He did it from his production company, to speak freely. It is a story told from another point of view. He is a guy who learned and grew.”

The filmmaker highlighted the warmth of the narration of the documentary, which is available on Prime Video for all of Latin America and in which they explain why Los Bukis dissolved, a group that began with Marco Antonio Solís and his cousin Joel, who, by the way, also offers his testimony.
