Elderly man fights for his life after being stabbed at Herald Square subway station

NEW YORK — A man is fighting for his life after being stabbed in the chest in a midtown Manhattan subway station, according to New York City Police.

The violent act occurred around 11:30 p.m. Sunday on the mezzanine of the 34th Street-Herald Square station. As the 76-year-old man entered the subway, police said a beggar approached him and asked for money.

When the man refused, the beggar stabbed him in the chest, according to detectives. The injuries sustained by the victim were so severe that he staggered to the station calling for help.

He was taken to Bellevue Hospital where he was said to be in critical condition.

Police are searching for the suspect, but have not provided any description of the individual so far. He ran away from the station after the alleged stabbing.
