By 2035, thermal cars will be banned in Europe. But the Old Continent is still lagging behind in comparison with China, while France is going to set up a leasing system at 100 euros/month. Despite certain obstacles such as the price of electric cars, the International Energy Agency’s Global Electric Vehicle Outlook report predicts an explosion in sales by the end of 2023.

20% of cars purchased in 2023 will be electric

An increase in electric car sales of around 35% worldwide in 2023? This is the conclusion of the International Energy Agency’s Global Electric Vehicle Outlook report. We learn that by the end of the year, 13 million electric cars will be sold against 10 million last year. This therefore means that 20% of the vehicles purchased will be electric, i.e. 1 out of 5a great step forward!

Fatih Birol, head of the International Energy Agency, says: Electric cars are one of the strengths of the new global energy economy which is rapidly emerging (…) and they are driving a historic transformation of the automotive industry around the world ».

The good ecological news is that it will take 5 million barrels of oil less per day in the world by 2030, again according to Fatih Birol, while electric buses and trucks will follow.

The International Energy Agency estimates that electric cars will represent 60% of sales by 2030 in Europe, the United States and China (where 60% of electric car sales took place in 2022).

Why will thermal cars be banned in Europe by 2035?

Europe wants to end the sale of thermal cars in 2035 on the whole continent. The approach is obviously ecological to fight against global warming increasingly worrying according to experts. The European Union is also aiming carbon neutrality pour 2050.

As explained by Fatih Birol, this widespread adoption of electric cars will allow to create jobs, to launch major innovations and to give birth to innovative technologies in cars that will renew the sector. In addition to electric cars, consumers will be able to turn to hydrogen cars.
