You eletric cars sold in Brazil will have their autonomy reduced in around 30%. However, this does not mean that it is a problem linked to a defect and, moreover, it is related to the National Institute of Metrology, Quality and Technology. After all, the agency is going to change the way of disclosing the range of vehicles in this category.

In practice, this is a solution that aims to make the advertised number closer to the car’s ability to reach the mark under real conditions of use. In this sense, Henry Joseph Jr., who is technical director of anfaveaparticipated in the moto method discussions and explained:

In the United States, some time ago, they observed that the tests led to very good values when compared to real use, on the street. This difference ended up being quite discussed. So they created a deflation factor, done on various vehicle types. Thus, deflation is applied to the value obtained in the laboratory. When the consumer takes the fuel consumption of km/l, the value he sees on the label is very close to what he will measure in real use

Inmetro, then, will apply a kind of penalty between 20% and 30%, as already occurs in measurements of fuel consumption in models of cars powered by combustion. Adalberto Maluf is president of Brazilian Electric Vehicle Association and director of BYD do Brasilsaid that he thinks this initiative is a little hasty, in addition to the way of testing not having been changed:

Standardization is good so that the consumer knows how to position himself in each context. But no one in the sector imagined that they would use that 30% penalty. It is a percentage that the EPA (US measurement method) uses in relation to the international standard, but this is about a country with a different behavior from Brazil

Anfavea, in turn, takes a position in favor of the novelty:

If you use the car in very favorable conditions, without air conditioning, on a straighter road, with tires at the right pressure, light weight, without sudden accelerations, the climate is in the range of 20 to 22 degrees, all these factors will favor much autonomy. But these conditions are not what people face on a daily basis.

Worldwide, the electric car segment continues to grow and a recent survey pointed out that 10% of vehicles sold in 2022 were in this category. Volkswagen, for example, even broke a record in the number of models sold.

As for this novelty, Inmetro has not yet commented. However, if the agency releases any news, this article will be updated.
