The road safety deployment carried out by the Government of President Nayib Bukele to protect Salvadorans who travel through different highways in the country is developing successfully, reducing traffic accidents by 7.42% so far in December, despite the increase in influx of vehicles at this time of year.

“In the month of December, 1,410 road accidents were reported, 7.42% less compared to last year,” explained the Vice Minister of Transportation, Nelson Reyes, which means more than a hundred fewer mishaps. In this month, accidents caused by drunk drivers have also been reduced by 8.42%, compared to 2021.

The above figure highlights the success of the plan in which traffic managers and inspectors from the Vice Ministry of Transportation (VMT) participate, in an articulated work with the Land Traffic Division of the National Civil Police (PNC).

The 2022 End of Year Plan runs from November 17 to January 2, 2023, developing more than 1,000 vehicle controls and 400 anti-doping tests. Apart from the managers, 775 transport inspectors, more than 100 anti-doping agents and more than 1,000 traffic police officers participate.

From December 1 to 27, more than 27,000 obituaries have been imposed for breaches of the General Traffic and Road Safety Regulations, and 111 people were arrested for driving while intoxicated or under the influence of drugs.

Throughout the year, from January 1 to December 27, 256,911 obituaries were posted, the majority to private vehicles and about 30,000 to public transportation.

To contribute to the safety of Salvadorans who visit family, friends or tourist destinations on these holidays, the Government of President Bukele provides the free road assistance service “MOP Assists You”, which is requested by calling 2510-0199, in case a person faces problems when traveling by car, anywhere in the country, due to mechanical failures, changing tires or lack of fuel.

“To date, there have been 1,155 road assistance, which translates into more than 57,896 kilometers traveled (to provide assistance),” said Vice Minister Reyes. In some cases, up to 200 kilometers have been traveled to help drivers with free towing service, 79% of assistance has been provided in the central and paracentral area.
